TRAFFICKING / Mission kvindehandel by Judith Lansade and Sine Plambech

It is estimated that there are 2,500 prostitutes from foreign countries working in Denmark. Some of them are presumed to be the victims of trafficking. In 2008, the Danish police established a special unit to combat the trafficking of women.

TRAFFICKING follows the investigations of this special unit and takes us to realms in the Danish sex industry where only police, prostitutes, and traffickers move. Through phone taps and surveillance, street actions and detective work, the police are constantly searching for witnesses and evidence to help them hunt down the criminals behind prostitution. But this is easier said than done. The police have to work within a legal framework that is often politically manipulated, and reality can be more complicated than you might imagine.

TRAFFICKING examines the conflict between the best intentions of the police special unit and the globalized world of illegal immigration, poverty, and voodoo.

The Danish police are working in a complex political world in which politicians want to see results in the form of traffickers behind bars, but social organizations consistently criticize police action. In reality, it's difficult for the police to catch the perpetrators, while the women they traffick in will do anything to stay in Denmark. The police must be trained to interview prostitutes who persistently lie to them, even though they want to help the women get away from traffickers. There is a conflict between the desire of the police to "help the women" and the women's own agenda. Compared to the options they have back in their native countries, the prostitutes themselves often see their work in Denmark as an attractive way to earn a living and are, therefore, not interested in being sent home.
